Life Hacks To Delay Long-Term Care

Life “hacks” (tips, tricks or shortcuts) are popping up everywhere from social media to the evening news and can cover topics ranging from how easily peel a mango to environmentally sound weed control.  Could there be a list of hacks that would help seniors stay out of nursing or retirement homes longer?

With an increasing number of older adults planning to age in place, remaining in their own home as long as possible, focus is growing on how to make homes safer and more comfortable for the elderly.

There are a few basic tips that will help you or a loved-one remain independent longer.

1. Fall Prevention – this practice is essential to remaining at home. More than half of all falls occur in the home and 40 per cent of admissions to long-term care residences are due to a fall.

2. Taking Medication Properly – checking for interactions – following directions – and having a regular review with doctor regarding each prescription. Use a weekly organizer or try downloading a medication minder app for tech-savvy seniors. Check any foods to avoid (ie: grapefruit juice or alcohol). Note any side effects and talk to a doctor about them – especially in relation to falls.

3. Have A Support System – using a system such as a daily phone call or email at a set time will allow caregivers and family to check in and be aware of any changes in routine indicating a concern.
