Style After 60

A few years ago, I was turning 40 and was reminded that 40 is the new 30. What everyone was really saying is that age is just a number and hitting a landmark such as 50 or 65 or 80 shouldn’t be the end of something but rather a new beginning. Style is no exception and many women (and men) still care about how they look and enjoy fashion in old age.

By the time a woman reaches the second half of life, she likely knows what looks good on her body. Trying to dress younger by following trends too closely can backfire, making a woman look even older. Instead, find your own signature look, avoiding elastic waist pants and matching from head to toe.

Prints are great, just keep it to one area such as a pant or skirt paired with a neutral top. Try to develop a monochromatic basic wardrobe and add a pop of colour for interest. If you are wary of color, try starting with your eye colour. The same principle goes for jewelry, try to have a focus on one accessory;  you don’t need to wear every piece you own at once.

Makeup should also be simple and elegant with just a touch of lipstick. Too much makeup or very dark haircolor can add years. Look for a chic hairstyle and choose a slightly lighter shade than your natural hair colour if you are covering grey.

Jeans are fine for older women, just look for more tailored styles such as a trouser jean in a darker denim.

Three keys to good fashion later in life:

Style – should be classic silhouettes

Fit – clothes should fit beautifully, use a tailor if necessary

Fabric – choose good quality, it will be more flattering and last longer

Have fun with your wardrobe, be yourself and invest in a few good classic pieces.
